  10. My Chemical Romance — I Brought You My Bullets, You Brought Me Your Love (+) I love this ridiculously long album title. Throws me back to the good old Fall Out Boy days.

Top 10 Songs

Top 10 songs

  1. Melissa O’Neil — Speechless (+) When this song came out, I loved it because as a really shy girl, this resonated with me.

  2. Frank Sinatra Jr. — Black Night (+)

  3. Gerard Way — Baby You’re a Haunted House (+) Newwww Gerard Way music. I think he also released something else recently. I have to check it out.

  4. Die Antwoord — Rich Bitch (+) HOW?! I will admit that this is a catchy song and Die Antwoord is a hardcore guilty pleasure of mine.

  5. Gwen Stefani — Rich Girl (+) Okay this is a definite case of Spotify. Gah.

  6. Mashrou’ Leila — Asnam (+)

  7. No Doubt — Just a Girl (+)

  8. Tuxedo — Do It (+) Another Spotify moment but I don’t mind this one. I found myself head bopping to this song at work a couple times.

  10. Franz Ferdinand — Michael (+)

My week for November 16, 2018 to November 23, 2018

Top 10 Artists

Top 10 Artists

  1. Coheed and Cambria (+1) Coheed and Cambria was only dethroned for a week! I wouldn’t say I listened to a lot more Coheed. The number is nice and low so hopefully it means I listened to more different artists this week instead of repeating this over and over.

  2. My Chemical Romance (+1)

  3. Björk (+2)

  4. 宇多田ヒカル (+2)

  5. L’Arc~en~Ciel (-5)

  6. Horizon (+) Horizon is a YouTuber who covered a lot of Japanese songs and interpreted Homestuck songs. She has one single original song and it’s pretty good. Recently she liked a comment of mine, I hope it means she’s back to recording music because she hasn’t posted in years!

  7. The Strokes (+)

  8. Evanescence (+) This seemed totally out of the blue but I did noticed a lot of Evanescence coming up on shuffle. Spotify algorithm, what are you trying to tell me?

  9. Jeff Wiliams (+)

  10. Alexisonfire (-1)

Top 10 Albums

Top 10 Albums

  1. Björk — Post (+8) What a jump! I really love Post. There are a lot of good songs off this album.

  2. My Chemical Romance — Danger Days (+) I suspect Spotify algorithm is the culprit but I’m not complaining.

  3. My Chemical Romance — The Black Parade (-)

  4. 宇多田ヒカル — ULTRA BLUE (+) I listened to this album straight through and wow, I don’t know if there’s a single song I don’t like on this album. But there aren’t a lot of amazing songs on this album either. It’s still good!

  5. Jeff Williams — RWBY Volume 1 (+)

  6. Mashrou’ Leila — Ibn El Leil (+)

  7. Alexisonfire — Crisis (+1)

  8. Coheed and Cambria — The Unheavenly Creatures (+)

  9. Evanescence — Fallen (+) HOW?! I don’t even like that many songs from this album.

  10. The Strokes — Is This It (+) The classic early 00’s rock album. I really liked this era of music.

Top 10 Songs

Top 10 songs

  1. boy pablo — everytime (-) Damn, boy pablo is doing good. This is the second week in a row. To be fair, this is a good song!

  2. My Chemical Romance — SING (+4)

  3. 宇多田ヒカル — time will tell (-1)

  4. horizon — Lost and Found (+) I’m not a wreck but I’m far from fully healed.

I can’t express the weight of the silence/But when it’s filled with your breath/I seem to fear it less.

Ahhh this is why I love musicians who write their own song lyrics and are good at it. Even though horizon is not a professional, there is something so incredibly beautiful and genuine about this song. It seems almost a little too personal. But it’s so heartfelt.

  1. Björk — All is Full of Love (+)

  2. Coheed and Cambria — No World for Tomorrow (+)

  3. Coheed and Cambria — Old Flames (+)

  4. Zessei Bijin! — I’m Your Man (+) Zessei Bijin is a YouTube singing group who covers Japanese songs. They covered I’m Your Man which is actually a Korean song by 2PM. There’s just something so great about an all girl group singing “I’m your man” over and over again.

  5. Alexisonfire — Keep it On Wax (+)

My week for November 09, 2018 to November 16, 2018

Top 10 Artists

Top 10 Artists

  1. L’Arc~en~Ciel (+3) Coheed and Cambria is finally dethroned! And no better band to dethrone them than good old L’Arc~en~Ciel.

  2. Coheed and Cambria (-1) I’m glad that I haven’t been trying to intentionally listen to less Coheed and Cambria, this was more organic. I still listen to a lot of Coheed, they’re still in second place.

  3. My Chemical Romance (+4) There are a lot of good songs that I’ve been rediscovering from MCR.

  4. Green Day (-2) Green Day has been gaming the RNG so hard the past couple weeks. I never really notice how much Green Day I’ve been listening to.

  5. Björk (+) Bless Björk. I’ve been listening to a lot of some her classic singles lately.

  6. 宇多田ヒカル (+) Oh Utada Hikaru. ULTRA BLUE is such a good album. A lot of my coworkers have been talking about Kingdom Hearts and since Utada is well known for her songs appearing in the video games, I had a sudden urge to listen to Utada.

  7. Amy Winehouse (-2) Why is shuffle so biased towards Amy? I have no idea why I keep listening to so much of Amy, but I ain’t complaining.

  8. The White Stripes (+2) I’m convinced Jack White is a bit of a nutcase but he does make good music.

  9. Alexisonfire (-5) Alexisonfire, I’ve been craving a lot of post hardcore lately. My Discover Weekly playlist on Spotify has been good about bringing it to me.

  10. DIR EN GREY (-2) Oh DIR EN GREY. Sometimes I just don’t remember why I liked them so much. They’re pretty good at times but I do have to be in a good mindset for their music.

Top 10 Albums

Top 10 Albums

  1. Amy Winehouse — Back to Black (+5) Again, Spotify you’re so biased.

  2. L’Arc~en~Ciel — KISS (+) There are a lot of good songs on KISS I really underappreciated this album when it came out.

  3. My Chemical Romance — The Black Parade (-1) Ahhhh such a classic emo album. Truly the greatest of all.

  4. Coheed and Cambria — The Afterman: Ascension (+2)

  5. Thrice — Vheissu (+)

  6. The GazettE — STACKED RUBBISH (+) Classic case of RNG. I never knew I had a lot of The GazettE in my library. I have no idea why STACKED RUBBISH was played so much outside of the RNG. I actually don’t like much of The GazettE’s music from that album.

  7. Evanescence — The Open Door (+) Interesting. I definitely noticed a lot of Evanescence in my shuffle. I don’t know if I should complain. It is a good album, I remember owning it when I was younger.

  8. Alexisonfire — Crisis (-3)

  9. Björk — Post (+) Definitely up there for one of my favourite Björk albums.

  10. 宇多田ヒカル — SINGLE COLLECTION VOL. 1 (+) I’m notorious for just liking singles and my god, over a 20-ish year career, Utada has a lot of great banging singles. Some of them are pretty dated but I still dig them.

Top 10 Songs

Top 10 songs

  1. boy pablo — everytime (+) But he replies with “ok” every time, every time. Bless boy pablo and their viral hits.

  2. 宇多田ヒカル — time will tell (+) This is a goodie. This is a song from Utada’s debut album and it is classic.

  3. L’Arc~en~Ciel — Yuki no Ashiato (+) Not my favourite from the KISS album but it is a good one.

  4. EMI MARIA — Lost in Tokyo (+) I think EMI MARIA is trying to break the Western market with her latest singles. While I don’t think she made a lot of success, I adore her songs. I really dig this one in particular because it’s catchy and relatable.

  5. Björk — Pagan Poetry (+) This music video is a little weird but I love it and this song. There is just so much in this song. The music box-like melody at the beginning, the pounding beat in the background, and Björk’s voice. The lyrics is dripping with sexual imagery (so is the music video) and it feels so extremely authentic. This is what I look for in music. Artists being able to reveal parts of themselves in a beautiful way.

  6. My Chemical Romance — SING (+)

  7. Amy Winehouse — Tears Dry on their Own (+)

  8. Thrice — Atlantic (+)

  9. Soundgarden — Black Hole Sun (+)

  10. My Chemical Romance — Disenchanted (+) There’s something nostalgic and melancholic about this song. It’s a song about looking back on life and finding out that it wasn’t all great but they made some good memories. I like it a lot. Definitely an underrated song.

My week for November 02, 2018 to November 09, 2018

Top 10 Artists

Top 10 Artists

  1. Coheed and Cambria (-) Wow, Coheed and Cambria has been #1 for five weeks in a row. I can’t stop listening to them, it seems.

  2. Green Day (+) I have too much Green Day in my library. Maybe I need to stop putting my library on shuffle.

  3. L’Arc~en~Ciel (+) How does Green Day beat out L’Arc~en~Ciel in terms of RNG? I definitely have a lot more L’Arc~en~Ciel in my library compared to Green Day. I call Spotify algorithm hacks.

  4. Alexisonfire (+2) Nice. This is RNG I can get behind. Whenever I’d see Alexisonfire on the queue, I would usually bump it up.

  5. Amy Winehouse (+) Still listening to those classics.

  6. Logic (+3) On the weekend, I listened to Logic on loop at least twice while hanging out with friends. My brother listens to him a lot and Logic is slowly growing on me.

  7. My Chemical Romance (+) More RNG trickery! I do not complain, however.

  8. DIR EN GREY (+) Oh man. When was the last time I wrote “DIR EN GREY”? It’s awesome going back to those tracks I love so much.

  9. Mashrou’ Leila (-6) Another RNG move I can get behind. Mashrou’ Leila is a good band and I need them to come out with more music ASAP.

  10. The White Stripes (+) I forget how I suddenly went on a White Stripes binge. I think I was reminscing about early 2000’s rock music and it naturally led me to The White Stripes. I really was a bit mystified over the Meg and Jack White dynamic for a while.

Top 10 Albums

Top 10 Albums

  1. Coheed and Cambria — The Afterman: Ascension (+5) This album is too good.

  2. Logic — Under Pressure (+) I was barely conscious for most of the time I was listening to this album (I feel asleep to it) but I really appreciate Logic’s autobiographical approach in this album. It’s pretty solid.

  3. Coheed and Cambria — Vaxis I: The Unheavenly Creatures (-1) I can’t stay away from this album, apparently. I haven’t really been going out of my way to play it, except for The Gutter sometimes.

  4. Amy Winehouse — Back to Black (+2) Classiccccc. Still haven’t listened to the rest of the album. I will queue it up now.

  5. Alexisonfire — Crisis (+) Bless this album, that got me into Alexisonfire in the first place.

  6. Green Day — Insomniac (+) This was the very first physical CD I ever owned. My mom bought it for me for my birthday back in elementary school. It is such a different sound but I really appreciate it in the grand scheme of Green Day’s discography.

  7. Jeff Williams — RWBY Volume 1 Soundtrack (-) Jeff Williams is a mystery to me. He really is a great composer and his daughter really nails the vocals on the RWBY soundtracks. But I think this album is the best out of all the RWBY volumes.

  8. Green Day — American Idiot (+) A classic. My favourite rock opera. I love it.

  9. Green Day — Nimrod (+) I think I like this album as much as I love American Idiot. Nimrod is a little bit of a mainstream sell out according to most punks (actually, most punks don’t find Green Day punk at all) but it’s a pretty solid album to me.

  10. Mashrou’ Leila — Ibn El Leil (+) I’m listening to Bint Elkhandaq right now. I can’t believe I initially disregarded this album as Mashrou’ Leila selling out but they perfectly blend that more pop sound with their indie alternative band sound on this album. They have a lot of good ones on this album.

Top 10 Songs

Top 10 songs

  1. Coheed and Cambria — The Hollow (+) The opener to The Afterman: Ascension. It’s calming and soothing. Pretty short. But good.

  2. Green Day — Song of the Century (+1) I actually don’t like this song too much but it’s pretty okay from Green Day’s recent era.

  3. Coheed and Cambria — The Gutter (+7) Bless. This. Song. It is so good. I love it. Every time I listen to it, I am just so happy to sing along.

  4. Green Day — Tight Wad Hill (+4) Oh man. I used to love this song from Insomniac! I don’t understand it anymore but I have fond memories.

  5. Alexisonfire — Boiled Frogs (-1) One of AOF’s bests. I think Wade in this song really sells it.

  6. Linkin Park — Numb (-) I remember when I went through a big Linkin Park phase. One time, when I went to the Philippines I bought a bootlegged Linkin Park CD which was basically just all their hits on one CD. I was too young back then to know it was a bootleg but now I know better.

  7. The Sound of Animals Fighting — On the Occasion of Wet Snow (-) This band really is really under my radar. I have an album of theirs, an artifact of one of the many bands one of my exes from high school introduced me to. They have a couple good songs. I might need to clear this out of my library.

  8. L’Arc~en~Ciel — AS ONE (+) I remember this song! It’s not one of the bests from L’Arc~en~Ciel but it’s still pretty good.

  9. ギルガメッシュ (Girugamesh) — FREAKS (+) RNG brought this song up. It’s pretty good. I really like the album this song is from. Girugamesh always had that pop element to them, being a slightly nu-ish metal band. Ah, Girugamesh. RIP.

  10. The Fool — God Bless You (+) Wow. The Fool! They came to my city once, at out local anime convention. It was wild seeing them. I have no idea what they are doing now.

Concert Bucketlist

Oct 31, 2018 | Comments

So this year I went to a bunch of concerts. Two of those concerts (Alexisonfire and Coheed and Cambria) were big wish listers for me and this got me thinking. What other artists do I want to see live?

L’Arc~en~Ciel

I know for sure that I want to see L’Arc~en~Ciel live in concert. L’Arc~en~Ciel is a band I got into around junior high. Thanks to the power of the Internet, I know approximately the first time I fell in love with L’Arc~en~Ciel. I used to watch anime all the time on YTV, one of the cartoon networks in Canada. They aired Fullmetal Alchemist the Movie: Conqueror of Shamballa on October 19, 2007 where L’Arc did two songs on the soundtrack and I loved them immediately.

I remember when L’Arc performed in Madison Square Garden a couple of years ago, I was insanely jealous. I watched the footage, the concert reviews, the fan interviews and bawled my eyes out. Even now, the mere thought of the possibility of seeing L’Arc~en~Ciel live in concert is bringing tears to my eyes. Actually, at this moment I’m listening to their 25th Anniversary live disc and I’m very emotional right now (yes, this is what spurred this post).

And a couple years ago, when they were planning their world tour they asked for suggestions for cities to go to and I spammed Canadian cities so hard. Of course, they never came. But I so desperately want to see them live one day.

L’Arc~en~Ciel is definitely a classic band for me. I remember making this post a like six years ago on Tumblr (god, remember all the confession tumblrs back then??). It’s still true to this day.

L'Arc~en~Ciel is my one and only real favourite band, even though I've gone through periods of not listening to them for months on end. They're the only band that I can come back to after a long time and listen to their songs as if I've listen to it for the first time and love it with the same intensity as before

I say “I can die happy now” after like every concert I’ve been to but seeing L’Arc~en~Ciel would be the concert that would actually make the statement true. I’ve been wanting to see them for 11 years now. I hope to god L’Arc~en~Ciel will continue touring until I can see them.

Björk

One of my friends asked once me who my musical goddess was (no joke) and when I answered with Björk he was surprised. “I thought it would be Beyonce,” is what he replied. No offense to Beyonce (love her, she’s amazing and empowering and makes great music) but she is definitely not on the level of artistry as Björk.

I remember watching TV in the dark late at night on MTV and Björk’s Bachelorette came on. I was entranced. This big voice coming out of a rather small woman wearing jeans and what seemed like a dress. I listened to so much Björk ever since.

Admittedly, some of her latest music kinda flies over my head nowadays but what I would give to see her live in concert.

Joanna Newsom

Continuing the trend of amazing women musicians… Joanna Newsom. I would love to see her live as well. I remember my ex in high school was the one who introduced her to me. I thank god I never think about him whenever I listen to Joanna Newsom. Her music transcends silly things like temporary bonds.

Most of the songs I love, Joanna would probably never play live again (okay, I really just want to hear Only Skin which is a 16-minute epic) but it would definitely be cool to see her live. She doesn’t do concert DVDs (as far as I can see) so most live footage I’ve seen have been shitty fan videos. I would want to hear harp live in action.

Green Day

This one is a little silly. I haven’t really loved Green Day in years. A lot of their songs have aged even if I do enjoy them from time to time. But I want to fulfill 12 year old me’s dream of seeing them in concert. I think it would definitely be a fun experience, they can put on a show.

Who Would I Not See Live?

I looked at my top artists on Last.fm and there are a couple of musicians who I love dearly but would probably be okay with not seeing them live.

DIR EN GREY is definitely one of those bands. While their music is banging, I’ve never liked watching their performances. If I had the chance to see them, I would do it but it’s definitely not pressing.

Utada Hikaru is another artist. I love her but she is definitely a studio artist and not really great at performing. Her voice is a bit weak and it doesn’t translate to great concerts. The Strokes is a band I wouldn’t see for a similar reason. Their concerts always seem really lacking in energy. Julian Casablancas has a great voice regardless but they’re usually just… Standing around on stage and engaging at all. They never seem like they’re having fun.

My friend asked me to go see Thrice with him this February (I said no, mostly because he lives all the way in Australia). It would be a lot of fun to see Thrice but I’m not that dedicated of a fan to do so. I only really like one of their albums. I don’t know much of their discography.

That being said, even if I wouldn’t go out of my way to see these artists live (I would fly to Japan to see L’Arc~en~Ciel if I have to), I would totally go see them if it wasn’t a hassle. Concerts are a lot of fun, even if you don’t really know the band well or at all. Here’s to hoping for more concert going in the future!
