My week for November 09, 2018 to November 16, 2018

Top 10 Artists

Top 10 Artists

  1. L’Arc~en~Ciel (+3) Coheed and Cambria is finally dethroned! And no better band to dethrone them than good old L’Arc~en~Ciel.

  2. Coheed and Cambria (-1) I’m glad that I haven’t been trying to intentionally listen to less Coheed and Cambria, this was more organic. I still listen to a lot of Coheed, they’re still in second place.

  3. My Chemical Romance (+4) There are a lot of good songs that I’ve been rediscovering from MCR.

  4. Green Day (-2) Green Day has been gaming the RNG so hard the past couple weeks. I never really notice how much Green Day I’ve been listening to.

  5. Björk (+) Bless Björk. I’ve been listening to a lot of some her classic singles lately.

  6. 宇多田ヒカル (+) Oh Utada Hikaru. ULTRA BLUE is such a good album. A lot of my coworkers have been talking about Kingdom Hearts and since Utada is well known for her songs appearing in the video games, I had a sudden urge to listen to Utada.

  7. Amy Winehouse (-2) Why is shuffle so biased towards Amy? I have no idea why I keep listening to so much of Amy, but I ain’t complaining.

  8. The White Stripes (+2) I’m convinced Jack White is a bit of a nutcase but he does make good music.

  9. Alexisonfire (-5) Alexisonfire, I’ve been craving a lot of post hardcore lately. My Discover Weekly playlist on Spotify has been good about bringing it to me.

  10. DIR EN GREY (-2) Oh DIR EN GREY. Sometimes I just don’t remember why I liked them so much. They’re pretty good at times but I do have to be in a good mindset for their music.

Top 10 Albums

Top 10 Albums

  1. Amy Winehouse — Back to Black (+5) Again, Spotify you’re so biased.

  2. L’Arc~en~Ciel — KISS (+) There are a lot of good songs on KISS I really underappreciated this album when it came out.

  3. My Chemical Romance — The Black Parade (-1) Ahhhh such a classic emo album. Truly the greatest of all.

  4. Coheed and Cambria — The Afterman: Ascension (+2)

  5. Thrice — Vheissu (+)

  6. The GazettE — STACKED RUBBISH (+) Classic case of RNG. I never knew I had a lot of The GazettE in my library. I have no idea why STACKED RUBBISH was played so much outside of the RNG. I actually don’t like much of The GazettE’s music from that album.

  7. Evanescence — The Open Door (+) Interesting. I definitely noticed a lot of Evanescence in my shuffle. I don’t know if I should complain. It is a good album, I remember owning it when I was younger.

  8. Alexisonfire — Crisis (-3)

  9. Björk — Post (+) Definitely up there for one of my favourite Björk albums.

  10. 宇多田ヒカル — SINGLE COLLECTION VOL. 1 (+) I’m notorious for just liking singles and my god, over a 20-ish year career, Utada has a lot of great banging singles. Some of them are pretty dated but I still dig them.

Top 10 Songs

Top 10 songs

  1. boy pablo — everytime (+) But he replies with “ok” every time, every time. Bless boy pablo and their viral hits.

  2. 宇多田ヒカル — time will tell (+) This is a goodie. This is a song from Utada’s debut album and it is classic.

  3. L’Arc~en~Ciel — Yuki no Ashiato (+) Not my favourite from the KISS album but it is a good one.

  4. EMI MARIA — Lost in Tokyo (+) I think EMI MARIA is trying to break the Western market with her latest singles. While I don’t think she made a lot of success, I adore her songs. I really dig this one in particular because it’s catchy and relatable.

  5. Björk — Pagan Poetry (+) This music video is a little weird but I love it and this song. There is just so much in this song. The music box-like melody at the beginning, the pounding beat in the background, and Björk’s voice. The lyrics is dripping with sexual imagery (so is the music video) and it feels so extremely authentic. This is what I look for in music. Artists being able to reveal parts of themselves in a beautiful way.

  6. My Chemical Romance — SING (+)

  7. Amy Winehouse — Tears Dry on their Own (+)

  8. Thrice — Atlantic (+)

  9. Soundgarden — Black Hole Sun (+)

  10. My Chemical Romance — Disenchanted (+) There’s something nostalgic and melancholic about this song. It’s a song about looking back on life and finding out that it wasn’t all great but they made some good memories. I like it a lot. Definitely an underrated song.

My week for November 02, 2018 to November 09, 2018

Top 10 Artists

Top 10 Artists

  1. Coheed and Cambria (-) Wow, Coheed and Cambria has been #1 for five weeks in a row. I can’t stop listening to them, it seems.

  2. Green Day (+) I have too much Green Day in my library. Maybe I need to stop putting my library on shuffle.

  3. L’Arc~en~Ciel (+) How does Green Day beat out L’Arc~en~Ciel in terms of RNG? I definitely have a lot more L’Arc~en~Ciel in my library compared to Green Day. I call Spotify algorithm hacks.

  4. Alexisonfire (+2) Nice. This is RNG I can get behind. Whenever I’d see Alexisonfire on the queue, I would usually bump it up.

  5. Amy Winehouse (+) Still listening to those classics.

  6. Logic (+3) On the weekend, I listened to Logic on loop at least twice while hanging out with friends. My brother listens to him a lot and Logic is slowly growing on me.

  7. My Chemical Romance (+) More RNG trickery! I do not complain, however.

  8. DIR EN GREY (+) Oh man. When was the last time I wrote “DIR EN GREY”? It’s awesome going back to those tracks I love so much.

  9. Mashrou’ Leila (-6) Another RNG move I can get behind. Mashrou’ Leila is a good band and I need them to come out with more music ASAP.

  10. The White Stripes (+) I forget how I suddenly went on a White Stripes binge. I think I was reminscing about early 2000’s rock music and it naturally led me to The White Stripes. I really was a bit mystified over the Meg and Jack White dynamic for a while.

Top 10 Albums

Top 10 Albums

  1. Coheed and Cambria — The Afterman: Ascension (+5) This album is too good.

  2. Logic — Under Pressure (+) I was barely conscious for most of the time I was listening to this album (I feel asleep to it) but I really appreciate Logic’s autobiographical approach in this album. It’s pretty solid.

  3. Coheed and Cambria — Vaxis I: The Unheavenly Creatures (-1) I can’t stay away from this album, apparently. I haven’t really been going out of my way to play it, except for The Gutter sometimes.

  4. Amy Winehouse — Back to Black (+2) Classiccccc. Still haven’t listened to the rest of the album. I will queue it up now.

  5. Alexisonfire — Crisis (+) Bless this album, that got me into Alexisonfire in the first place.

  6. Green Day — Insomniac (+) This was the very first physical CD I ever owned. My mom bought it for me for my birthday back in elementary school. It is such a different sound but I really appreciate it in the grand scheme of Green Day’s discography.

  7. Jeff Williams — RWBY Volume 1 Soundtrack (-) Jeff Williams is a mystery to me. He really is a great composer and his daughter really nails the vocals on the RWBY soundtracks. But I think this album is the best out of all the RWBY volumes.

  8. Green Day — American Idiot (+) A classic. My favourite rock opera. I love it.

  9. Green Day — Nimrod (+) I think I like this album as much as I love American Idiot. Nimrod is a little bit of a mainstream sell out according to most punks (actually, most punks don’t find Green Day punk at all) but it’s a pretty solid album to me.

  10. Mashrou’ Leila — Ibn El Leil (+) I’m listening to Bint Elkhandaq right now. I can’t believe I initially disregarded this album as Mashrou’ Leila selling out but they perfectly blend that more pop sound with their indie alternative band sound on this album. They have a lot of good ones on this album.

Top 10 Songs

Top 10 songs

  1. Coheed and Cambria — The Hollow (+) The opener to The Afterman: Ascension. It’s calming and soothing. Pretty short. But good.

  2. Green Day — Song of the Century (+1) I actually don’t like this song too much but it’s pretty okay from Green Day’s recent era.

  3. Coheed and Cambria — The Gutter (+7) Bless. This. Song. It is so good. I love it. Every time I listen to it, I am just so happy to sing along.

  4. Green Day — Tight Wad Hill (+4) Oh man. I used to love this song from Insomniac! I don’t understand it anymore but I have fond memories.

  5. Alexisonfire — Boiled Frogs (-1) One of AOF’s bests. I think Wade in this song really sells it.

  6. Linkin Park — Numb (-) I remember when I went through a big Linkin Park phase. One time, when I went to the Philippines I bought a bootlegged Linkin Park CD which was basically just all their hits on one CD. I was too young back then to know it was a bootleg but now I know better.

  7. The Sound of Animals Fighting — On the Occasion of Wet Snow (-) This band really is really under my radar. I have an album of theirs, an artifact of one of the many bands one of my exes from high school introduced me to. They have a couple good songs. I might need to clear this out of my library.

  8. L’Arc~en~Ciel — AS ONE (+) I remember this song! It’s not one of the bests from L’Arc~en~Ciel but it’s still pretty good.

  9. ギルガメッシュ (Girugamesh) — FREAKS (+) RNG brought this song up. It’s pretty good. I really like the album this song is from. Girugamesh always had that pop element to them, being a slightly nu-ish metal band. Ah, Girugamesh. RIP.

  10. The Fool — God Bless You (+) Wow. The Fool! They came to my city once, at out local anime convention. It was wild seeing them. I have no idea what they are doing now.

My Week in Music #3: 2018/10/19 - 2018/10/26

Last.fm is a website that can keep track of users and their listening habits. I’ve been listening to music with Last.fm since 2010 and am slightly obsessive over my music stats. These stats are for my listening from the past week.

My week for October 19, 2018 to October 26, 2018

Top 10 Artists

Top 10 Artists

  1. Coheed and Cambria (-) Even though I’ve been making a conscious decision to not listen to as much Coheed and Cambria, I’m still listening to them quite a lot. They’re too good!

  2. Vitamin String Quartet (*) This came totally left field. I was looking for In Keeping Secrets of Silent Earth: 3 on Spotify and then I found that this group covered the entire album. When I looked through their discography, they covered a lot of cool alternative/rock/indie bands from the early to mid 2000’s and I went on a huge nostalgia trip. It’s a shame they’re only a quartet, I feel like a lot of the songs would have benefited from an entire orchestra. But yeah. Would recommend.

  3. Green Day (+6) I have so much Green Day in my library, I never really noticed. Lately I’ve been putting my library on shuffle and just letting it ride out. Some songs don’t have a lot of draw for me anymore. But similar to last week, I am still rocking out to those American Idiot and Nimrod tunes.

  4. Thrice (*) Thrice is a long time favourite of mine. I saw one of my friends listening to them on Spotify one day and I just went back and listened to them on repeat for a couple of hours.

  5. Amy Winehouse (+2) I don’t know how I overlooked some of Amy’s songs. I still need to listen to her discography.

  6. My Chemical Romance (*) This is another case of putting my library on shuffle, I feel. I have so much My Chemical Romance. I’m like 99% sure I have their entire discography, bar B-sides and demos and concert versions.

  7. Eminem (*) This week has just been pure nostalgia. With Kamikaze coming out, I went on Spotify and saved all the Eminem songs I listened to back in the day. A lot of them from Encore. This was another case of library shuffle and the Spotify algorithm probably picking more Eminem songs because he’s popular.

  8. Alexisonfire (*) More nostalgia and more library shuffle! I didn’t notice a lot of Alexisonfire this week. But I do recall rocking out to We Are the Sound a couple of times whenever it came on. It’s hard not to.

  9. Joanna Newsom (*) The nostalgia trip never ends. It’s a shame that Joanna doesn’t put her music on Spotify. I have most of her discography anyway (Divers was the last album I bought) and I can listen to it offline on Spotify but it’s still a barrier.

  10. Mashrou’ Leila (*) Wow, more nostalgia. Mashrou’ Leila is definitely more recent in my music history but I haven’t picked them up in a couple of months and I totally forgot how they have a bunch of great bops.

Top 10 Albums

Top 10 Albums

  1. Coheed and Cambria — Vaxis I: The Unheavenly Creatures (-) I told myself not to overplay this album but I just can’t stay away from it. It’s a little weird how no tracks made it into my top 10 songs for this week but that might be a good thing.

  2. Coheed and Cambria — The Afterman: Ascension (+1) Domino never gets old for me. Every time I listen to it, I can see the music video play so clearly in my head.

  3. Thrice — Vheissu (*) Vheissu is easily my number one or number two favourite album of all time. There is no track in this album that I don’t like or will ever skip. It’s great from start to finish.

  4. Amy Winehouse — Back to Black (+2) Not much to say about this one. Just been listening to a couple of tracks on repeat.

  5. Coheed and Cambria — In Keeping Secrets of Silent Earth: 3 (-3) Definitely slowly winding down on the Coheed. Mostly just listening to A Favor House Atlantic.

  6. Coheed and Cambria — Good Apollo, I’m Burning Star IV: Volume 1 (-2) Why is this album so good? Like, seriously. So many good songs on this album. But, still toning it down with the Coheed.

  7. Joanna Newsom — Ys (*) The only reason why Vheissu might be number two instead of number one is because of this album. I love this album. I think it is probably Joanna’s best album. It is a beautifull crafted piece of art. I love it.

  8. Coheed and Cambria — Good Apollo, I’m Burning Star IV: Volume 2 (*) Was talking to my friend about a couple tracks from this album. It’s pretty underrated, I’m not sure why so many fans are “meh” about it.

  9. Protest the Hero — Fortress (*) I was looking for good study music but I didn’t want like strings or lo-fi beats so I tried looking up metal/rock study music. Thank god Protest the Hero released instrumentals for their songs. Surprisingly, a lot of them definitely sound a lot less energetic without vocals. What a difference it makes!

  10. Jeff Williams — RWBY Volume 1 Soundtrack (*) RWBY Volume 1 has arguably the best soundtrack in the entire series. This Will Be the Day, Gold, From Shadow, Mirror Mirror, Red Like Roses, I Burn, I May Fall, Wings,… There are way too many good songs on it. The only song that I don’t like from the soundtrack is probably Red Like Roses Part II (just kidding as I’m writing this I’m listening to it now and I like it).

Top 10 Songs

Top 10 songs

  1. Amy Winehouse — Tears Dry on Their Own (*) He walks away, the sun goes down, he takes the day but I’m grown. Oh Amy, thank you for gracing the world with your music. I really think this is a nice and hopeful song.

  2. Thank you Scientist — Feed the Horses (+7) Wow, this song went up from last week. It’s a good song but I’m not entirely sure why I keep listening to it as much as I have.

  3. Coheed and Cambria — Domino the Destitute (-1) This song is a banger. That is all.

  4. Coheed and Cambria — No World for Tomorrow (*) Probably the best song off of the album. Curse us, as god has. Amazing. I would love to hear this song live one day. There’s no world for tomorrow, if we wait for today. I remember talking about how In Keeping Secrets of Silent Earth: 3 made me feel like a soldier marching into battle, this definitely takes that concept and amps it up a hundred times.

  5. Kero Kero Bonito — Only Acting (-5) Still a good song, just haven’t been listening to it as much. Time to queue it up.

  6. Sharon Van Etten — A Crime (+1) I hope I never grow tired of this song because it is beautiful.

  7. Coheed and Cambria — A Favor House Atlantic (-2) The other day I looked up the music video for this song. It is so ridiculous but hilarious. They definitely take a jab at Green Day with Claudio dressing up in Billie Joe’s trademark black button up and red tie, it’s so funny.

  8. Frank Carter & The Rattlesnakes — Neon Rust (*) I really need to listen to more of their songs because this is a really good song. I just love the atmosphere of the song. The melody in the beginning is really soothing and then it builds up to the chorus. It feels a little empty until the climax but it really releases all the tension in the song. So good.

  9. Joji — SLOW DANCING IN THE DARK (-5) Joji. Who hurt youuuuuuu??

  10. Coheed and Cambria — Crossing the Frame (*) Good jam. I’m spying on you Newoooo.

My Week in Music #2: 2018/10/12 - 2018/10/19

Oct 27, 2018 | Comments

Last.fm is a website that can keep track of users and their listening habits. I’ve been listening to music with Last.fm since 2010 and am slightly obsessive over my music stats. These stats are for my listening from the past week.

My week for October 12, 2018 to October 19, 2018

Top 10 Artists

Top 10 Artists

  1. Coheed and Cambria (-) I’m still riding that Coheed and Cambria hype. I’m trying so hard not to be listening to them 247. I just want to play their new album over an over again!

  2. Metric (*) I have been playing a couple of their songs over and over again. They really make me want to jump up and dance!

  3. Daughter (*) This is another case of replaying a band over and over again. Youth is such a good song, I always feel it every single time I listen to it.

  4. 椎名林檎 (+5) Shiina Ringo came out with a song recently-ish and her catalog is now on Spotify. So I’ve been listening to a lot of her this week.

  5. boy pablo (-4) My boy, Pablo, is still a goodie but I feel like i’m listening to too much of him. I only like two of his songs (or more accurately, I’ve only listened to two of his songs).

  6. Kero Kero Bonito (*) They released an album the same week that Coheed and Cambria released theirs and I like it a lot! Only Acting is my favourite from the album. I don’t know how to describe it. Like a noisey grunge pop rock?

  7. Amy Winehouse (*) I have no idea what triggered my Amy Winehouse resurgence. I loved her a lot back in junior high with her Back to Black album.

  8. Childish Gambino (-) Feels Like Summer is still a bop even though we’re well into October. And since I’m doing Sober October this month, Sober is my ironic song of the month. Even though the song title is “Sober” the chorus goes, “I’ll never be sober.” The opposite of what I want but hey, it’s catchy!

  9. Green Day (*) Wow, this is a surprise for me. I have no idea where this came from. I don’t remember listening to this much Green Day. I did recently went through their entire catalog on Spotify and saved the songs that I like. I love a lot of their songs. It’s always nostalgic listening to their songs. Whatshername and Redundant are two songs I can think of listening to this week. So good.

  10. Joji (-7) Ahhh, Joji. SLOW DANCING IN THE DARK is getting a little too melancholy for me. It’s a good song though. I need to check out some of his other songs. There’s this one song I do like but it’s not on Spotify. Joji sampled and remixed a song and it’s pretty good.

Top 10 Albums

Top 10 Albums

  1. Coheed and Cambria — Vaxis I: The Unheavenly Creatures (-) This week Coheed is a little less dominating. But I still have been listening to a lot of them. I just can’t keep my hands off Vaxis: I.

  2. Coheed and Cambria — In Keeping Secrets of Silent Earth: 3 (+1) This album is slowly growing on me. It really is a huge epic. I need to take a couple more playthroughs with this.

  3. Coheed and Cambria — The Afterman: Ascension (+1) Nostalgia is really hitting me hard with this. I say this a lot but Ascension is definitely one of my top albums of all time. It’s just so good.

  4. Coheed and Cambria — Good Apollo, I’m Burning Star IV: I (-2) I don’t want to wear out Good Apollo I too much. This album is another nostalgic classic.

  5. Kero Kero Bonito — Time ‘n’ Place (*) They released this album the same week Coheed released Vaxis I and I love it!

  6. Amy Winehouse — Back to Black (*) Really the only Amy Winehouse album that I’ve listened to. I need to get a proper listen though. I’m really only familiar with the singles and Me and Mr. Jones.

  7. Joji — SLOW DANCING IN THE DARK (*) This is just a single. I’m kinda looking forward to the album? YEAH RIGHT was a little iffy but I’m optimistic for the rest of the album.

  8. The Front Bottoms — Talon of the Hawk (*) One of my friends introduced me to this band and I really like them unironically. The vocalist has such a weird voice that I don’t think is that good but it adds character. It’s really folksy and it works for this band.

  9. Sharon Van Etten — Epic (*) Oh man, why didn’t I find about Sharon Van Etten earlier? Epic is a heartbreaking album. It details an abusive relationship Etten went through and her lyricism is just so beautifully tragic. I love her.

  10. Mystery Skulls — Forever (*) This band came up on my Discovery Weekly playlist, if I recall correctly. Forever is a decent album but there are a couple of standouts. One of my friends showed me the music video for Ghost and it’s great. They recently came out with another music video and my favourite song from the album, Every Note is featured for like thirty seconds on it.

Top 10 Songs

Top 10 songs

  1. Kero Kero Bonito — Only Acting (*) I thought I was only acting but I felt exactly like it was all for real. This song is so fun! I love it. I love the noisey grunge and the glitchy 80’s/90’s aesthetic.

  2. Coheed and Cambria — Domino the Destitute (*) Definitely one of Coheed’s best songs. I’m so surprised they don’t play it more often in their shows. It’s just so… Hard hitting. I get chills up my spine when I listen to it.

  3. Coheed and Cambria — Evagria the Faithful (*) I’ve spoken about Evagria before but I love this song. It’s groovy and funky and haunting. They really nailed the prog elements in this song.

  4. Joji — SLOW DANCING IN THE DARK (*) A small part of me is a little weirded out at how depressing Joji’s songs are. Who hurt you Joji, who hurt you? But it makes for good songs.

  5. Coheed and Cambria — A Favour House Atlantic (*) This is a poppy bop and a fun one to listen to live. Good eye, sniper. Now I shoot, you run!

  6. Coheed and Cambria — The Dark Sentencer (-3) This song is slowly wearing out for me. But it’s a good opener to a great album and a good head banger.

  7. Sharon Van Etten — A Crime (*) To say the things I want to say to you would be a crime/To admit I’m still in love with you after all this time/I’d rather let you touch my arm until you die. Ahhh. Sharon Van Etten! Who hurt you?? It’s such a beautiful and painful song. I love it.

  8. boy pablo — Everytime (*) The song that started it all for these boys. It’s really mellow.

  9. Thank you Scientist — Feed the Horses (*) This band is on the record label that the frontman of Coheed and Cambria founded. They are so proggy, I enjoy it. They have a lot of jazz elements which is pretty cool.

  10. Mystery Skulls — Ghost (*) Such. A. Bop. I want to sing along to it all the time. When I’m in the office and this comes on, I definitely start mouthing the lyrics.
